How to Choose the Right Saw for Your Metalwork
If you deal in metal cutting, deciding whether to use cold saws or band saws can be quite a dilemma. Band saws are powered by electric motors. They are essentially saws with toothed metal stretched out between wheels in order to cut material. Even though they have evolved, the concept of using band saws dates back to 1809. They are used to cut metal, wood or plastic and come in different sizes to suit the needs of the user. Because of their versatility, they are used in many industries. A good band saw is one with satisfactory horsepower depending on the use, quality blade guides, a good frame, usually steel and good tooth blades.
Cold saws, on the other hand, are saws, powered by electric motors that use blades made from high speed steel or tungsten carbide-tipped. These blades are used over and over again before discarding. They can be resharpened. They work by transferring heat to chips made by the blade. This ensures that both the blade and the metal being cut stay cool. Just like band saws, they have evolved over the years and become a preference for many especially when there is a need for bulk production.
Comparison
Cold saws are focused on accuracy and preciseness. They do not leave messy edges. They also work faster than band saws. However, they are much more expensive. The cuts are clean and angular. They are, therefore, preferred by wielders and craftsmen who need quality cuts. The cutting capacity is, however, limited compared to band saws. They are also unable to cut through really hard material without making the blades blunt. Their blades can be resharpened and used again and again. This is, of course, such great value for money. The blades are only replaced when they become too small.
Band saws focus on versatility. They are able to cut through just about any material. For really hard material, you can just adjust the teeth hardness and blade configurations. The quality of the cut is not very good and the blades cannot be resharpened for use. They, however, last long so they don’t have to be replaced often. In cases where there is a lot of different material to be cut and the edges don’t necessarily have to be perfect, band saws are preferred.
Each one of the saws has special features that set them apart. It all depends on your personal priorities. It is important to take into consideration all factors before making that choice. Consider what it is that you cut more regularly and make the right choice. You can consult an expert before making a decision.
